Tip Of The Day... Follow That Cab!

How many times have you seen a movie and wanted to jump in a taxi and say "Follow that car!" Well, in this case it's more like "Follow that taxi!"

It's quite common that I get email asking advice on various topics with regards to La Carrera Panamericana. One topic I feel important for first timers of La Carrera Panamericana has to do with finding your way around while in cities. If you were on a casual site seeing trip and had plenty of time to find your destination there would probable be no reason for concern. On the other hand, with the fast paced transit and race schedule where time is of the essence for many reasons, you really don't have the luxury of taking your time not to mention the unwanted stress.

Many teams trust that they can follow the log book or a friend and in fact many times that is the case but more than not there are going to be times when the person you are following you will pull over and look at you with that look of "Where in the hell are we?" All of a sudden the relaxing drive to the hotel is not so relaxing any more and panic begins to set in not to mention you could spend hours driving around trying to get back together with your crew not to mention the much needed time spent relaxing and unwinding or working on the car and God forbid a shower. And besides, who knows the best streets and shortcuts for trailers as well?

Take it from me the fix couldn't be any easier. If there is one thing that there is no shortage of in Mexico it taxis. Simply wave a taxi over and put one of your guys with him and tell him where you want to go. The cost of a taxi in Mexico is less than a couple quarts of oil. As a matter of fact, there is no need whatsoever to even use your rigs after you have parked them when you consider the cost of gas you will use and not knowing where to go.

Taxis works great. Used them a couple of times.
But don't accept the help from the ever so helpful local police. Did that one year and it costs a lot more than a taxi.
