Qualifying; Times Aren't Important... Results Are

While he didn't turn in the fastest times during the first two days of practice Paul Dallenbach wasn't worried nor should he be. In fact Paul was focused on doing what others should have been doing. Instead of worrying about fast times Paul continued to focus on testing which tire and set-up would perform best under the many various circumstances. After all, there is no such thing as pole position and the bottom line is the fastest time on Sunday takes home all the glory.

Speaking from experience what Paul has been doing is exactly how a true champion goes about preparing his ride. Some years ago I stood back for what seemed like an eternity as one of my drivers sat and stared at some tires contemplating which ones to put where on the car. As race time got close I finally told him, "Hey, it's a no brainer. You need to put on "the good tires" so you can get on pole." He looked back and said, "I'm not trying to figure out how to win the pole... I'm figuring out which tires will win the race." Point well taken and I have the exact same hunch that is exactly what's going on in Paul Dallenbach's mind too.

Oh and by the way... This being the last day of practice Paul turned in the fastest times today. As a matter of fact, he spanked the entire field. Thanks to intellegent planing and preperation, now the stage is set. Go get'em Paul!

PPIHC Qualifing Results

Like everyone else I was wondering why no results had been posted so spoke to a friend at the PPIHC main office today and she told me the weather conditions had caused havoc with their WiFi score keeping system. Beause of that problem there seems to be some questions about the Vintage class qualifying times for day one.

Here are the following qualifying times for Vintage class however they are posted as results for day 2 so it's not clear if these are day one or two. Isnt this the way it always is when you're not there in person? Stay tuned.

As you can see Doug Mockett had a good day and based on his last run he really spanked the entire field. Doug sent me an email that said, "Angelica & I qualified first in vintage. A few dented cars, the usual ... Doug"

PPIHC TV Coverage

And For Todays Highs & Lows

On one hand I am really excited about Hershel's race at Portland International Raceway this weekend but on the other hand I never really realized how much I was going to miss running in this years Pikes Peak International Hill Climb until right now. Even as I sit here typing this post the Vintage class are practicing the top section of the mountain. While I'm excited for all of them I am recalling an old saying my father used to use... "I wish I was there racing and I wish they all had a feather in their butt and we'd all be tickled to death." As soon as I hear any news I'll get it posted.

Besides keeping tabs on the Vintage class cars I will also be watching the progress of a friend of mine who is returning in an attempt to break the 10 minute barrier and there is a very good chance he might just pull it off. His name is Paul Dallenbach and one reason Paul believes he can break the record is because of a major change in this year's set up, that being new tires. Apart from being an avid racer, Paul is a much sought after stunt driver for TV and movies and you may have seen one since he was the driver of the awesome Ford GT commercial that was filmed at Thunderhill Raceway.

Paul is the youngest member of the famous Dallenbach Racing Family. His racing career has been showered with trophies and accolades from his peers. Paul actively campaigns #98, a 750 horsepower, hand built, open-wheel hill climb car and is a 3-time Overall Champion and 5-time Division Winner and will return to Pikes Peak this week for one last run in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb. Since 1989, Dallenbach has participated in the race an astounding 14 times and is considered
one of the most popular racers.

Back To Defend His (Their) Title

Anyone who has ever raced with Doug Mockett will say the same thing... A fierce adversary, super personality, very smart and someone you'd be proud to call your friend. The same can be said about Angelica Fuentes with one exception... She's far better looking than Doug.

Doug and Angelica in his 1954 Oldsmobile Super88 are returning to Pikes Peak to defend their title.

Colorado Springs, June 26----- Fans at the 2009 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb can enjoy a sort of “Time Travel” experience again this summer when they watch the entries in the Vintage Race Car field.

Defending champ Doug Mockett of Chistiansed, St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands is set to seek another title with his co-driver, Angelica Fuentes, and they’ll be aboard their 1954 Oldsmobile Super 88 again. They won it all last year on the Hill with a clocking of 14:26.034 to nudge out runnerup Keith Davidson of Golden, Colorado, in his 1963 Ford Falcon Sprint, also coming back to race again.

The Vintage drivers will be at the wheel of autos including 1965, 1966 and 1968 Ford Mustangs, a 1952 DeSoto, a 1955 Chevy Corvette and a 1971 Plymouth Barracuda.

Mockett was a Rookie on the Hill last summer when he won the crown, but he’s had decades of experience across the globe. In 2002 he won the fabled Carrera Panamericana, viewed by experts as perhaps the most dangerous race in the world.

He began his career in road racing in 1961-62 as a crewman for late Road Racing Drivers Club President Mark Donohue, and then went into racing broadcasting before becoming a promoter of motorcycle races. He has been a successful racer of Vintage cars from New Zealand to Monaco to the Monterey Historics, provides his stable of vintage Formula One cars to young American drivers to showcase their skills to a new audience of potential sponsors, and has been a significant supporter of the development of young American road racers.

Raised in Short Hills, New Jersey (25 miles west of New York City), he attended his first race at nine years old, when his father took him to a race at a board track. "I couldn't believe it, it was just out of sight. It was unreal. They were racing midgets and what you would call jalopies." In his teens and twenties, Mockett helped out local amateur racers, one of whom was Mark Donohue. "Mark Donohue grew up in the town next to mine. I crewed for him over a couple of seasons in SCCA and really got into it. We had a great time, obviously. He was just a real character. Really great. Just a good guy."

Mockett obtained his BA in English from Hobart College in Geneva, New York -- conveniently on the other side of Lake Seneca from Watkins Glen. Hitchhiking down Route 14, Mockett saw his first race at the legendary track in the Fall of 1958. "Joe Bonnier won in a Maserati 250F and I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. It was just unbelievable. It was a Formula Libre race, so mainly, it was a run what you brung. I remember he had a big dice with Peter Ryan from Canada, who was driving a sports car of some sort. But Bonnier was clearly the class of the field."

Growing restless in the Spring of 1968, while he was finishing up his MBA at N.Y.U. and doing advertising and public relations for a brokerage house on Wall Street, Mockett decided to take time off. His two choices were sailing the Caribbean or attending all the Grand Prix races that season. "One night after a few beers, I flipped a coin and the Grand Prix races came up. I've often looked back and wondered what would have happened if the sailing had come up."

On the scene will be the world famous Budweiser Clydesdales, a chance to meet the drivers and racers, view their cars and motorcycles, music with live local bands, a Firefighters Chili Cook-Off, food and refreshments, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb’s Mobile Museum, a merchandise and race ticket booth, displays of custom cars and motorcycles, and stuff for kids like Freestyle Motocross Jumping exhibitions.
